A city to walk, and to drive
Kigali spreads over some twenty hills. Distances are short, but the slopes are steep: from Kimihurura to Nyamirambo, or from the airport to a hotel in town, a car saves half an hour and a fair amount of breath.
The city is known for its cleanliness. Plastic bags have been banned since 2008, and on the last Saturday of each month, during Umuganda, residents spend the morning on community work.
What not to miss
The Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, to understand the country; allow two hours and a moment of quiet. Kimironko market for fabrics and fruit. The art galleries of Kacyiru and Kimihurura. Nyamirambo, the liveliest neighbourhood, in the late afternoon.
In the evening the city is best seen from above: from the terraces of Kiyovu, the lights on the hills draw the map of Kigali.
