A Rwandan tradition, applied to gorillas
In Rwanda, a child is named in front of family and friends: this is "kwita izina". Since 2005 the ceremony has been held for young mountain gorillas, to thank the trackers, rangers, vets and communities living around the park.
Part of the permit revenue goes back to those communities: 10% of income from permits and park fees funds local projects.
Getting there
The ceremony takes place in Kinigi, 2.5 hours from Kigali. Lodges around Musanze fill up months ahead: book the transfer and the lodge together, and add a trek if you can, as September permits go very early.
